Thanks so much for checking out NewGenerationCareers.com – it’s great to have you here.
I’m Marlene Cole and I’m so glad you found me because I’ve got a pretty exciting story to share with you.
A story I’d love for you to make your own.
17 years ago, I was a Retail Manager in Victoria. 13 years ago I was a full-time mum in Karratha. 11 years ago I was a Senior Recruiter in Darwin. 9 years ago I was working in the WA Oil & Gas marine industry, then Branch Manager of another recruitment agency, a finally HR Officer in the NT. Between all of this, I had travelled around Australia and overseas with plenty of gaps in my resume!
It sounds like the CV of a career nomad, always on the move in search of greener pastures. And, to be honest, that’s probably a pretty apt description.
But in each career that’s come across my path, I’ve tried to make the most of the experience by gaining as much knowledge as possible from key people at the top of their game. And as soon as that well ran dry, or I learnt enough to know the top job wasn’t one I aspired to do, I searched for a new career path.
I’ve been successful in creating three jobs, in companies that I wanted to work for, just by my strategic approach.
Fast forward 4 years ago and I had finally turned my part-time business into Pilbara Resumes and created a successful company – which is kept busy purely on referrals from satisfied clients. I also dedicated plenty of study to become Australia’s first Trades & Construction Resume Specialist, an international nomination and award winning resume writer – Toast of the Industry (TORI), and the second highest resume writing contributor for the latest Resumes for Dummies book.
That’s where the story ends, right?
Sure, I was doing what I loved but I was spending way too much time in front of my computer and I realised working one-on-one with my clients, that I cannot write everyone’s resume. Nor do I want to!
Knowing that I want to have a work life balance, time with my family, catch-ups with friends and plenty of travel while helping others reach their career goals – something had to change!
To do this, I needed to share my depth of recruitment, personal branding and strategic resume writing knowledge to a larger audience.
What about you? Where are you on your career path?
Every day I receive resumes in the old-style templates, even new job seekers coming straight out of school, are using the exact same resume format that I came out of school with 20+ years ago!
Mums (or dads) returning to the workforce after taking time out; even employees trying to gain more pay, better roles or promotions as they change careers or climb the corporate ladder – I can see that not many people know how to market themselves.
Enough is enough!
Are you tired of applying for jobs and not hearing anything back? Do you feel that on paper, your career history just looks like a boring ‘laundry list’ of jobs anyone in that role would be expected to do? Want to spend more time building networks that work? Want to find job satisfaction? Do you want to be more in control of your career and work choices?
Attending training, writing 1000s of job application tools and watching webinar after webinar to become a top expert in Resume Writing, I could still see that most people don’t understand how to work with recruiters or use proactive job search strategies.
Yes, the job market is tough out there at the moment, but at the end of the day, your resume is the first and often last impression an employer or recruiter has of you… it is your stepping stone to a job interview .
So today it is more important than ever to show who you really are in this first step, and if you ARE getting calls – great, it is working!
But if not, there could be more than one factor holding you back. It may be your resume, your social media content, your interviewing skills, or even your approach to finding a job.
Wake up call.
It was during one extremely ridiculous moment at a recent Careers Expo seminar on writing resumes that I decided enough was enough.
I was sitting there with 50 job seekers in the room, listening to a ‘professional resume writer’ sharing a long list of how you should take this off your resume, add this, talk about that, use LinkedIn and basically showing a slideshow checklist of 21 points that were really just lots of tips that didn’t give us any direction.
Most people left the room even more confused!
Have you ever found yourself in a similar scene?
I realised that all these tips and ideas didn’t make sense to someone who had never seen what the new style of resumes, cover letters or LinkedIn profiles looked like – so how could they make changes!
And from that day on, everything changed.
So that’s why I created our Next Step workshops and private Career Accelerator programs.
For perhaps the first time in your life, you’ll walk out of a workshop armed with examples and completed strategies that will immediately turn around your personal branding tools.
I’d like to personally invite you to join me and create your own story. It’s time to start building your own new generation career.
Because I LOVE watching people as they realise how simple these strategies can be and the shock as they realise how much they are capable of…with just a little helping hand.
I can’t wait to meet you and share your career ideas!
The Business End…
